Coty, Inc. is a renowned beauty brand that was founded by François Coty in 1904. François Coty, originally known as Joseph Marie François Spoturno and hailing from Corsica, relocated to Paris and adopted the more French-sounding name of François Coty, with “Coty” serving as a variation of his mother’s maiden name. Initially working as a secretary, Coty pursued a study of perfumery under a local pharmacist. This marked the beginning of his ambitious mission to revolutionize the fragrance industry, which had seen little innovation since the 19th century.
In 1904, Coty introduced his first fragrance, La Rose Jaqueminot, which quickly propelled him to millionaire status. Coty’s expertise extended beyond perfume creation and encompassed the art of marketing fragrances as well. One of Coty’s famous quotes encapsulates his approach: “Give a woman the best product to be made, market it in the perfect flask, beautiful in its simplicity yet impeccable in its taste, ask a reasonable price for it, and you will witness the birth of a business the size of which the world has never seen.” Uniting a captivating fragrance with elegant packaging became a distinguishing feature of Coty’s brand. For instance, La Rose Jacqueminot was presented in a striking Baccarat bottle. Coty recognized the significance of offering a beautiful and luxurious product, such as perfume, in an equally alluring package. In collaboration with ceramic artist and jeweler Rene Lalique, Coty designed ornate bottles and adorned them with gilded labels in the Art Nouveau style for his early creations, including L’Origan.
Coty stood out as one of the innovative pioneers in marketing perfume to middle-class and working-class women by packaging fragrances in smaller and more accessible bottles. This strategy proved immensely successful and played a pivotal role in transforming perfume from an exclusive luxury for the wealthy into an international mass-market product. Coty’s expansion continued as the company acquired factory space, allowing them to regulate the entire production process on a large scale. In addition to fragrances, Coty extended their product range to include cosmetics, with their Air Spun powder remaining on the market to this day.
One notable Coty creation, introduced in 1917, was Chypre, a fragrance that inspired an entire olfactory family. Named after the island of Cyprus in French, Chypre’s innovative blend of oakmoss, labdanum, and bergamot captured the hearts of consumers and served as a catalyst for numerous best-selling fragrances from other companies, including Guerlain’s Mitsouko. Expanding their footprint globally, Coty established an American division post-World War I, alongside subsidiaries in the United Kingdom and Romania. However, a bitter divorce and the Wall Street Crash of 1929 significantly diminished François Coty’s fortune.
In 1934, François Coty passed away, leading his ex-wife Yvonne to sell the Coty brand to pharmaceutical company Pfizer in 1963. This transaction prompted a strategic shift, with Coty fragrances predominantly marketed through drug stores and mass retailers until the early 1990s. In 1992, ownership of the company transferred to Joh. A. Benckiser GmbH, setting the stage for a new era of Coty’s success in the fragrance industry. Presently, Coty operates under two divisions: Coty Beauty and Coty Prestige, offering fragrances spanning various price points through nearly 40 distinct brands.
With 110 perfumes in our fragrance base, Coty remains a venerable perfume house, spanning from its earliest edition in 1905 to the most recent release in 2021. Coty’s fragrances have been crafted in collaboration with esteemed perfumers such as Philippe Roques, Christophe Raynaud, Vincent Roubert, François Coty, Jean-Pierre Weil, Sophia Grojsman, Bernard Chant, Ann Gottlieb, Carlos Benaim, Henri Robert, Harry Fremont, Coty, Firmenich, and Daphné Bugey.
