Chopard is a prestigious Swiss watchmaker and jewelry house that was established by Louis-Ulysse Chopard in 1860. Originating in the charming Swiss village of Sonvillier, Chopard initially focused on crafting precise timepieces in the esteemed Swiss tradition. Setting itself apart, the company opted to produce many of its watch components in-house, abstaining from utilizing parts manufactured by external factories. This commitment to quality and reliability swiftly earned Chopard a well-deserved reputation, prompting the founder’s son, Paul Louis, to establish a second branch in La Chaux de Fonds and relocate the company’s headquarters in 1921. In 1937, the company transferred its operations to Geneva, which was renowned as the global capital of Haute Horlogerie (Fine Watchmaking) at the time.
The stewardship of Chopard later passed to Paul Andre Chopard, the great-grandson of the founder, in 1943. Recognizing the need to ensure a continuation of the family’s illustrious legacy in producing exceptional timepieces, the company sought a buyer. In 1963, it was acquired by Karl Scheufele, a member of a distinguished German watchmaking family. Under the Scheufele family’s leadership, Chopard flourished, as they modernized the company and expanded its expertise into the realm of exquisite jewelry. Notable milestones during this era include the introduction of the acclaimed “Happy Diamonds” collection, featuring watches adorned with freely moving diamonds encased between sapphire crystals, as well as the creation of the first Sport watches on leather straps.
Remaining true to its origins as a family business, Chopard maintains its strong heritage under the guidance of Karl Scheufele’s children. Caroline leads the fine jewelry division, while Karl-Friedrich oversees the watchmaking division. The company possesses three manufacturing facilities in Switzerland and proudly showcases its products in exclusive boutiques and distribution outlets worldwide.
Chopard’s commitment to the world of arts and culture is exemplified through its partnership with the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. Notably, the company redesigned the iconic Palme d’Or award in 1998. Additionally, Chopard sponsors the Male and Female Revelation of the Year awards at Cannes, further solidifying its dedication to talent and creativity.
In 1992, Chopard joined forces with L’Oreal to introduce a collection of luxurious fragrances under the esteemed Chopard brand. The debut fragrance, the sweet and immensely popular Casmir for women, enjoyed great success and catalyzed a series of flankers. In 1994, Heaven, the brand’s first men’s fragrance, was launched. Chopard often presents its fragrances in elegant flacons reminiscent of precious gemstones, with notable examples including the gem-inspired fragrance Wish from 1999. The brand has also released fragrances that harmoniously align with its watch and jewelry collections, such as the Happy Spirit fragrances, which complement a corresponding timepiece collection.
With a repertoire of 64 perfumes in its fragrance base, Chopard continues to captivate with its olfactory creations. Collaborating with esteemed perfumers such as Nathalie Lorson, Thierry Wasser, Michel Almairac, Alberto Morillas, Mark Buxton, Olivier Polge, Bruno Jovanovic, Emilie Bevierre-Coppermann, Dora Baghriche, Jean-Christophe Hérault, Dominique Ropion, Veronique Nyberg, Alienor Massenet, Christine Nagel, Amandine Clerc-Marie, Nicolas Beaulieu, Lucas Sieuzac, Nathalie Feisthauer, Louise Turner, Michel Girard, Alexandra Jouet, and Ursula Wandel, Chopard continues to create fragrances that embody elegance and sophistication. The brand’s fragrance range spans from its earliest edition in 1986 to its latest release in 2023.
