Chaumet is a renowned French house that specializes in luxurious jewelry and watches. Founded by Marie-Etienne Nitot in 1780, in the heart of Paris, the brand quickly gained recognition when Josephine, the wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, became Nitot’s first notable customer. This led to Nitot being appointed as the official jeweler to the Emperor in 1802 and designing iconic pieces such as the Napoleon Tiara and the Imperial Sword. Nitot’s creations became powerful symbols of the Empire’s grandeur and prestige. His talent also extended to designing stunning pieces for Marie-Louise’s Imperial wedding. Nitot passed down his expertise to master craftsmen Fossin, Morel, and eventually Chaumet.
Jean-Baptiste Fossin and his son Jules played a pivotal role in shaping the brand’s identity, drawing inspiration from the decorative arts of the Italian Renaissance and the French 18th century, as well as natural motifs such as vines, olive and chestnut trees, hawthorn, and fruits. Their clientele included prestigious figures like the Duchess de Berry, the royal family of King Louis-Phillip, foreign aristocracy, and esteemed artists.
Jean-Valentin Morel relocated to London after the 1848 revolution and further expanded the business. As Queen Victoria’s jeweler, his reputation soared. Notable clients included Napoleon III, Empress Eugenie of Montijo, and Dukes Rochefoucault and Luynes. Morel’s son Prosper also contributed to the company’s success during this period.
In 1885, Joseph Chaumet married Prosper Morel’s daughter and inherited the house. He subsequently renamed it Chaumet and, in 1907, established the flagship boutique at 12, Place Vendôme in Paris. Marcel Chaumet, Joseph’s son, took over the reins in 1928 and embraced the art deco and avant-garde styles, creating jewelry with geometric shapes. Despite the challenges posed by the Second World War, the house continued to be a pioneer in luxury, tastefulness, and creativity.
In 1999, Chaumet was acquired by the LVMH Group, and under the guidance of French architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte, the brand expanded globally with 70 stores. Additionally, Chaumet made its mark in the world of perfumery, launching three fragrances in 1999 in collaboration with renowned perfumers Gerard Anthony, Raphael Haury, and Louise Turner.
