Charles Jourdan (1883 –1976) was a renowned French fashion designer who gained fame for his exquisite designs of women’s shoes. With a career spanning from 1919 until his passing, Jourdan left an indelible mark on the fashion industry. Following his death, his sons succeeded him in continuing his legacy.

Trained as a shoemaker, Jourdan established a shoe shop in Romans, located in the Drôme region of France. His business thrived, and his shoes rapidly gained popularity among women. In 1921, he relocated his company to a factory on Boulevard Voltaire, employing over 30 individuals.

Recognizing the significance of advertising, Jourdan actively promoted his company in women’s magazines, establishing his brand as a haute couture house.

In 1947, Jourdan’s three sons joined the company, leading to its expansion beyond the borders of France, specifically in the United Kingdom. The opening of the first boutique in Paris followed in 1957. Subsequently, the company acquired licenses to design and manufacture shoes under prominent brands such as Christian Dior and Pierre Cardin.

A distinguishing characteristic of the Jourdan brand is its commitment to setting trends and pioneering innovations in the fashion industry, particularly in shoe design. Jourdan solidified the avant-garde image of the brand through collaborations with renowned surrealist photographer Guy Bourdin. In the 1970s, the company diversified its offerings by introducing clothing and handbags.

Following Jourdan’s demise in 1976, his sons successfully carried on their father’s vision, expanding Jourdan boutiques to major cities in Europe and North America. The brand even found favor with notable figures such as Imelda Marcos, who adorned herself with Jourdan stilettos.

Unfortunately, in 2002, the company faced financial difficulties and filed for bankruptcy due to substantial debts. Consequently, the Jourdan family sold its stake to a Luxembourg investment fund named Lux Diversity.

Over the years, the company has unveiled several fragrances, predominantly catering to women. The fragrance line currently boasts eight perfumes, with the earliest edition dating back to 1978 and the newest release in 2004. Collaborating with esteemed perfumers such as Caroline Sabas, Jean-Marie Santantoni, Max Gavarry, Mark Buxton, Francoise Caron, and Jean-Louis Sieuzac, Charles Jourdan fragrances have captivated the olfactory senses of many.
