According to legend, in 1380, the father prior of the Carthusian Monastery of St. Giacomo was pleasantly surprised by the arrival of Queen Giovanna d’Angiò to Capri. In a hurry to greet her, he hastily gathered the most exquisite flowers found on the island and arranged them in a bouquet. Unbeknownst to him, the water in which the flowers were placed remained unchanged for three days. To his astonishment, when the flowers were finally discarded, the prior noticed that the water had acquired a distinctly captivating fragrance. Determined to uncover the origin of this scent, he sought the expertise of the father alchemist, who traced it back to the mystical “Garofilum silvestre caprese,” a species unique to Capri. This marked the birth of the first perfume of Capri.
In stark contrast to the legend, historical accounts reveal that in 1948, the prior of the Monastery stumbled upon the long-lost formulas of the ancient perfumes. Obtaining permission from the Pope, he entrusted these precious formulas to a skilled chemist from Turin. The chemist, appreciating the magnitude of his task, established the world’s smallest laboratory and named it “Carthusia,” paying homage to the monastery’s original name, Certosa. Carthusia’s mission became a vital continuation of this rich tradition, as they painstakingly recreated these exceptional fragrances using methods preserved by the Carthusian monks.
Each Carthusia creation boasts a limited production, allowing for a meticulous commitment to utilizing exclusively genuine, high-quality ingredients. Even the final packaging is completed by hand, emphasizing the artisanal nature of their craftsmanship. The essence obtained from rosemary collected on Monte Solaro is skillfully incorporated into men’s products, while the essence of the enchanting Capri wild carnation graces the fragrances tailored for women.

Since its inception in 1948, Carthusia has collaborated with renowned perfumers such as Luca Maffei and Laura Bosetti Tonatto.
