Carlos Santana is a renowned guitarist and musician known for his contributions to rock, salsa, and jazz. Born in Mexico in 1947, Santana initiated his music career in San Francisco during the 1960s. Initially, he performed as a solo artist in jam sessions before joining forces with David Brown and Gregg Rolie to form the Santana Blues Band. The band gained immense popularity and even had the opportunity to perform at the iconic Woodstock festival in 1969. This exposure led to a record deal with Columbia Records.
Throughout the years, the lineup of the band changed, and Santana himself engaged in various side projects. The band released four albums before Santana legally acquired the rights to the band’s name in 1973. He subsequently formed a new version of the band, shifting their style towards jazz fusion. Over the course of the 70s and 80s, Santana and his band released numerous albums while experiencing fluctuations in band members. In 1990, after a twenty-two-year stint with Columbia Records, Santana left the label and signed with Polygram.
The early 90s proved to be a challenging period for Santana as he found himself without a contract. However, his former collaborator at Columbia Records, Clive Davis of Arista Records, offered him a new opportunity. This resulted in the creation of the album “Supernatural,” which featured collaborations with notable young artists such as Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty, Eric Clapton, Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, Everlast, Cee-Lo, ManĂ¡, Dave Matthews, K. C. Porter, and J. B. Eckl. “Supernatural” soared to the top of the US album charts and sold over 15 million copies in the United States alone, cementing itself as Santana’s biggest commercial success. The album received nine Grammy Awards in 2000, with Santana himself being credited for eight of the wins.
In the years that followed, Santana continued to release albums, including “Shaman” in 2002, “Possibilities,” and “All That I Am” in 2005. His 21st studio album, “Guitar Heaven: The Greatest Guitar Classics of All Time,” was released on September 21, 2010, by the Santana band. Additionally, in 2005, Victory International company launched two fragrances bearing Carlos Santana’s name.
