Candie’s, a renowned clothing brand catering to the young demographic, was established in 1981. This iconic brand has solidified its position in pop culture within the United States, garnering immense popularity during the vibrant decades of the 80s and 90s. Offering a wide range of fashionable apparel, footwear, accessories, and jewelry, Candie’s has become a household name.
The brand derives its name from the Candie’s ‘slide,’ a seductive and high-heeled wooden shoe marketed by Charles Cole, the founder of El Greco, Inc. This shoe style gained notable recognition through its appearance in the iconic movie “Grease.” By the mid-1980s, the demand for Candie’s slides skyrocketed, with sales reaching an impressive 14 million pairs.
Throughout its history, Candie’s has undergone several ownership changes. In 1986, the brand was acquired by Pentland Group plc., followed by Neil Cole’s ownership in 1991. Subsequently, the Iconix Brand Group took over in 1993. In 1996, Neil Cole successfully revived the Candie’s brand by collaborating with renowned fashion designers such as Betty Johnson, Nicole Miller, Anna Sui, and Vivienne Tam. Candie’s ventured into jeans and apparel, introducing them in the fall of 1999. Concurrently, they inaugurated two showrooms spanning 3,000 square feet in New York City. This era also witnessed the endorsement of prominent celebrities like Jenny McCarthy, Shania Twain, Lil’ Kim, Brandy, Jennifer Esposito, and Lisa Loeb.
Under the ownership of Liz Claiborne Cosmetics (LCC), Candie’s expanded its product line to include cosmetics and fragrances in 1999. This fragrance collection encompassed perfumes, soaps, and body mists for women, as well as colognes, aftershaves, and hair-and-body wash for men. Notably, their advertising campaign stirred controversy, featuring notable personalities such as Alyssa Milano, Carmen Electra, and Dennis Rodman.
In 2005, Kohl’s Department Stores secured exclusive rights to the Candie’s brand across all departments, excluding shoes. Expanding their product offerings, Candie’s introduced new fragrances, namely “Heartbreaker” in 2006 and “Candie’s Luxe” in 2008. Designer Candie’s presently boasts an impressive lineup comprising of 11 perfumes, with the earliest edition originating in 1999 and the newest creation hailing from 2012. These remarkable fragrances were crafted under the expertise of perfumer Thierry Wasser.
