Founded by Henry Sands Brooks in 1818, Brooks Brothers stands as the pioneering ready-to-wear fashion house in America. Recognizing the demand for convenient and fashionable attire, Brooks Brothers introduced finished suits in 1854, providing a solution during the Californian Gold Fever when time was of the essence and tailoring seemed impractical.
In 1850, the company found its iconic logo, a golden-threaded sheep with a stripe on its belt, which remains their official emblem to this day. This logo holds historical significance, tracing back to the 15th century as an emblem of the Knights of the Golden Fleece and symbolizing wool-growers. In ancient Greek mythology, the golden fleece played a vital role in the legend of Jason and the Argonauts.
Expanding their presence, a second prominent store opened in New York in 1858, situated at the intersection of Broadway and Grand Street. Over time, the location shifted to Union Square and then to the intersection of Broadway and Bond Street. As the company developed, their offerings expanded to include polo jackets, brand-logo ties, shetland jumpers, and socks.
In 1988, Brooks Brothers was acquired by Marks & Spencer, who invested $7 million in restoring the old shop located on Madison Avenue. Embracing the digital era, the brand launched its first online store in 1998 and opened their flagship store in 1999, both in New York. In tune with modern advancements, the company introduced Digital Tailoring, an innovative technology that scans the body and creates clothes tailored to each individual’s unique contours and proportions.
In addition to their fashion offerings, designer Brooks Brothers has also ventured into the fragrance industry, with 12 perfumes in their fragrance base. Collaborating with esteemed perfumers such as Vincent Schaller, Steve DeMercado, James Krivda, Marypierre Julien, Rodrigo Flores-Roux, Richard Herpin, and Ilias Ermenidis, Brooks Brothers continues to craft captivating scents. The brand’s fragrance line made its debut in 2008 and continues to expand, with the latest creation unveiled in 2018.
