Alexandre Napoleon Bourjois, the pioneering force behind the brand, revolutionized the beauty industry in 1863 with the introduction of the first powder blush. Frustrated with the heavy, oily make-up commonly utilized by actors of that era, Bourjois sought to develop a lighter and more refined alternative. His innovative creation quickly garnered attention and gained widespread acclaim.
By 1879, Bourjois’ blush had earned the favor of stage performers in the vibrant metropolis of Paris, prompting its availability to the general public. Its popularity soared, ensuring its lasting commercial success. Even to this day, the pot containing the iconic powder blush continues to captivate consumers.
Originally intended exclusively for actors and actresses, Bourjois’ first line of make-up consisted of waxy sticks. However, it didn’t take long for these products to captivate the public, becoming an instant hit.
In addition to the groundbreaking blush, Bourjois introduced a luxurious rice powder in 1879. This product, renowned for its ability to lighten the skin and impart a velvety softness, quickly became one of the most sought-after items in the brand’s repertoire. Catalogues featuring an array of blushes, eye shadows, lipsticks, and powders were soon delivered to countless homes, captivating consumers with their attention to even the minutest of details. Bourjois’ success burgeoned as a result.
The year 1924 marked the creation of the brand’s inaugural perfume, Mon Bourjois, followed by the release of Soir de Paris in 1928. These alluring fragrances further cemented Bourjois’ place in the beauty industry.
The introduction of Paris-boxes in the 1930s proved to be a stroke of genius. These elegantly designed boxes, available in numerous variations, catered to women on tight budgets, allowing them to possess a curated selection of Bourjois’ esteemed products. The Paris-boxes experienced unparalleled popularity and have since been reissued in newly crafted designs, often for special occasions like Christmas.
In the vibrant landscape of the 1980s, Bourjois expanded its range of cosmetic offerings with the introduction of eye shadows packaged in distinct round pots. With an extensive selection of more than 30 shades, these eye shadows became an iconic symbol of the era.
Building upon the success of Mon Bourjois and Soir de Paris, the company continued its olfactory exploration, releasing additional fragrances that celebrated the captivating beauty of women. In 1936, Ernest Beaux crafted Kobako, a mesmerizing leather chypre composition featuring notes of citruses, vanilla, jasmine, rose, magnolia, galbanum, cloves, cinnamon, carnation, tonka, lily, orris, benzoin, frankincense, amber, oakmoss, musk, and leather.
During the 1950s, Bourjois unveiled Evasion, a fragrance adorned with prominent notes of hyacinth, jasmine, lily of the valley, and honeysuckle, capturing the essence of leisurely escape.
In 1998, Clin D’Oeil Cosmic Girl emerged as a fruity-floral masterpiece centered around vibrant violet and alluring licorice. This fragrance marked the first of several perfumes within the Clin D’Oeil collection, each boasting unique aromatic compositions. The visionary house of Bourjois boasts an extensive fragrance base, with 42 exquisite perfumes in its collection. Collaborations with esteemed perfumers Francois Demachy, Jacques Polge, Ernest Beaux, Henri Robert, Juliette Karagueuzoglou, Jacques Huclier, and Alienor Massenet have contributed to the brand’s legacy of olfactory excellence. Since its inception in 1928, Bourjois has continuously pushed the boundaries of perfumery, with its most recent creation released in 2022.
