Bourbon French Parfums, established in 1843 by August Doussan, has a rich history rooted in New Orleans, Louisiana. After immigrating from France, Doussan set up his perfumery in the renowned French Quarter, where he began crafting exquisite fragrances for the city’s elite families. Among his earliest creations was the beloved Kus Kus fragrance, which continues to be a top-seller for the brand. Doussan later partnered with J.H. Tindel, a talented chemist with a strong background in perfumery gained during his time in Europe. Together, they renamed the store Bourbon French Perfume Company.
Over the years, the perfumery flourished under different ownerships. Marguerite Caro, a dedicated employee who had studied perfumery under Tindel’s tutelage, eventually acquired the business. In 1973, Marguerite’s granddaughter, Alessandra Crain, inherited the perfumery, carrying on the legacy of her family. In 1991, the current owner, Mary Eleftorea Behlar, purchased the business from Alessandra, ensuring its continuity.
Throughout its existence, Bourbon French Parfums has preserved the essence of its original creations by Doussan and Tindel, while also introducing new fragrances curated by subsequent owners. Each fragrance is meticulously hand-blended and produced in small batches, with a strong focus on utilizing natural ingredients. The dedication to craftsmanship and quality is a hallmark of Bourbon French Parfums.
In addition to its wide range of fragrances, Bourbon French Parfums offers bespoke perfume services in its charming shop located on Royal Street. The perfumery has become renowned for its personalized approach, allowing customers to create unique scents tailored to their individual tastes and preferences.
Bourbon French Parfums has amassed an impressive collection of 38 perfumes in its fragrance base. As an established perfume house, it boasts editions dating back to 1843, with the newest additions released in 2018. Throughout its journey, the brand has collaborated with esteemed perfumers such as Alessandra Crain, Mary Eleftorea Behlar, J.H. Tindel, and the founder himself, August Doussan, ensuring the continued excellence and innovation of their fragrances.
