Borghese

Borghese is a prestigious Italian cosmetic company that boasts a rich history rooted in tradition and elegance. Founded in 1958 by Princess Marcella Borghese, a member of the revered Italian Borghese family, the brand carries with it a sense of aristocracy and sophistication.

Originally known as Marcella Borghese, Princess Borghese ventured into the world of cosmetics by drawing from her family’s longstanding tradition of creating their own exquisite skin creams and beauty products. Utilizing secret recipes that incorporated natural ingredients and fruits, she set out to develop a small range of lipsticks based on these coveted formulas. In an era when only two shades of lipstick were available, one for brunettes and one for blondes, Marcella sought to introduce a wider spectrum of colors that would complement different hair colors and attire. Inspired by her love for precious jewels, she decided to name each shade after her favorite gemstones.

Despite initial opposition from her family, Marcella received a significant endorsement for her idea when Pope Pius XII expressed his support. In 1956, she forged a partnership with renowned cosmetics pioneer Charles Revson, the founder of Revlon, who aided her in establishing her own cosmetic line. One of her initial collections featured vibrant lipsticks and nail polishes in hues inspired by her friend Pucci’s collection of knitwear. Marcella was also ahead of her time in creating cosmetics that drew from the natural therapies offered at spas, hence, she aptly named her line “Montecatini” after her cherished personal spa.

Marcella Borghese remained actively involved in her business until her passing in 2002. In 1991, Revlon sold the cosmetics division, alongside Halston fragrances, to a group of Saudi investors, leading to the rebranding of the company as Halston-Borghese. In 2000, American entrepreneur Georgette Mosbacher, renowned for her success with the La Prairie brand in the early 1990s, acquired the company and reverted its name back to Borghese. Currently, Georgette Mosbacher serves as the esteemed CEO of the company.

Today, Borghese cosmetics stand as the epitome of a harmonious fusion between Italian tradition and modern innovation. The brand prides itself on offering high-quality skincare, color, and treatment products that celebrate the innate beauty of women. Among their prestigious line-up of offerings, Il Baco Eau de Parfum stands as a particularly famous fragrance. Introduced in 1993, it continues to captivate discerning individuals with its timeless allure. Additionally, the Borghese collection includes three perfumes, with the earliest edition dating back to 1978 and the most recent unveiling occurring in 2001.
