Bogner, a renowned German brand, has gained international recognition for its exceptional sportswear, cosmetics, and accessories. Established in 1932 as a small manufacturer in the heart of Munich, the company has consistently upheld its commitment to quality for over 75 years. Founded by Willy Bogner Sr. and Maria Bogner, the family tradition continues with their son, Willy Bogner Jr., and his wife Sônia, who currently manage the company.
At its inception, Willy Bogner Sr. focused primarily on ski wear. A celebrated cross-country skier and ski jumper, he won 11 German championship titles in the Nordic combination. Combining his sporting career with the import of skis, accessories, and knitted goods from Norway to Munich, he laid the foundation for the brand’s success. Maria Bogner, his wife, was instrumental in the brand’s early designs. She introduced a skillfully tailored winter anorak, specifically designed for Olympic team competitors. Additionally, she revolutionized winter fashion with the creation of stretch elastic pants, which were widely acclaimed after their debut at the first Bogner fashion show in 1948 and became known as “The Bogners.”
Bogner’s impressive reach spans over 30 countries worldwide, offering a diverse range of collections designed by Sônia Bogner. These include Bogner Woman and Man, featuring elegant and cosmopolitan attire with a sporty casual twist, as well as Bogner Sport, encompassing the Ski, Golf, Wellness, and Resort lines. For younger consumers, Bogner Fire + Ice and Bogner Kids cater to the needs of children. The design of the Bogner collection began in 1937 when Willy Bogner Sr. married Maria Lux, who took over the responsibility of designing the collection. In 1955, Maria created the iconic B accessory, a silver letter charm that has since adorned all Bogner zippers, serving as a symbol of the brand.
In 1972, Willy Bogner Jr., who excelled as a skier and had studied business and clothing technology, joined the management team to oversee the sports collection and advertising. Subsidiaries were quickly established in the United States (1973) and Switzerland (1975), while tennis and golf collections were integrated into the company’s offerings.
Upon the passing of William Bogner in 1977, his son assumed control of the company. His wife, Sônia, took charge of designing the ladieswear. The brand expanded further with the introduction of licensed lines, including Bogner Eyes and Bogner Parfums.
To commemorate Bogner’s international sports film “Fire and Ice,” the brand unveiled the Bogner Fire + Ice collection in 1989. This dynamic sportswear and snowboard collection embraced a youthful and exciting approach to fashion. Throughout 2000, Bogner experienced significant growth and diversification through licenses, including Bogner Jeans (2000), Gloves and Time (2002), Bogner Golf Korea (2002), and Bogner Ski (2004). Notable accolades awarded to the brand include FiFi Awards for Bogner perfumes and the prestigious silver Design Prize of the Federal Republic of Germany for Bogner Ski.
Expanding its presence globally, Bogner opened its first store in the United States in 2008, followed by additional locations in Salzburg, Kitzbühel, and St. Moritz. After 2010, franchise stores opened in Istanbul, Kiev, and Yekaterinburg, with the establishment of Bogner Asia. For those interested in exploring the company’s extensive history, the exhibition “Bogner Live – Tradition + Vision” was curated in 2011 at the Apolda Avantgarde Gallery.
Bogner has also made a name for itself in the fragrance industry, with 27 distinct perfumes. The brand has collaborated with renowned perfumers Dirk Lauven, Martin Gras, and Evelyne Boulanger to create these exquisite aromas. The fragrance collection spans from its earliest edition in 1985 to the latest release in 2013.
