Bob Mackie is a renowned figure in the world of fashion, home furnishings, and entertainment. His diverse range of designs includes sportswear collections, signature fragrances, collectible Barbie® dolls, luggage, home furnishings, and framed fashion and costume illustrations.

Growing up in Southern California, Mackie developed a deep fascination with Hollywood glamour. He initially embarked on his career as an assistant to some of the industry’s top designers but quickly rose to prominence as an independent designer. His exceptional talent caught the attention of stars like Fred Astaire, Mitzi Gaynor, Dinah Shore, and Diana Ross and the Supremes, for whom he created stunning outfits.

Mackie’s collaboration with the “Carol Burnett Show” began in 1967 and continues to this day. Along the way, he caught the eye of iconic artists such as Cher, who sought his expertise to create costumes for the “Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour” and various performances and tours.

Notably, Mackie has enjoyed an extraordinary television career, receiving an impressive 31 Emmy Award nominations and taking home nine Emmy Awards. His significant accomplishments culminated in his induction into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 2002, making him the sole costume designer to achieve such recognition. His success also extended to the world of film, earning him Oscar nominations for his costume designs in movies such as “Lady Sings the Blues” (Diana Ross), “Funny Lady” (Barbra Streisand), and “Pennies from Heaven” (Steve Martin and Bernadette Peters).

In 1982, Mackie expanded his creative endeavors to include ready-to-wear collections, which were warmly embraced by the fashion industry. He further diversified his portfolio by introducing a signature fragrance called “Mackie,” launching the collectible Mackie Barbie® doll program, and initiating the “Wearable Art” program for the QVC television network.

In 1998, Mackie ventured into the realm of home furnishings, offering his clients a sense of style, luxury, and elegance in their own living spaces. His debut collection, “Bob Mackie Home” furniture, garnered enormous success.

Mackie’s exceptional contributions to the worlds of fashion and costume design have not gone unnoticed. He received the prestigious Design Legend Award from the Otis College of Art and Design in May 2011, in addition to an honorary doctorate degree from the institution. Furthermore, he was bestowed with the tdf/Irene Sharaff Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008 for his remarkable theatrical costume career.

The Bob Mackie Retrospective, established in 1999 at The Museum at The Fashion Institute of Technology (“FIT”), served as a testimony to Mackie’s impact on fashion and costume design. The exhibition showcased over 125 of his breathtaking creations, complemented by sketches, photographs, videos, and other memorabilia that documented his extraordinary career. Visitors also had the opportunity to view a comprehensive display of Mackie’s collectible Barbie® doll series. Journalist Frank De Caro further celebrated Mackie’s designs through his book, “Unmistakably Mackie.”

As a testament to his multifaceted talents, Bob Mackie has created a total of seven perfumes in our fragrance base, with the earliest edition dating back to 1985 and the newest being from 2000.
