Cristobal Balenciaga Eizaguirre was a renowned Spanish Basque designer and the founder of the esteemed fashion house, Balenciaga. With a lifelong training in the art of tailoring, Balenciaga possessed a rare skill set that allowed him to personally design, cut, and sew his own creations. He experienced early success in Spain shortly after World War I; however, the onset of the Spanish Civil War compelled him to relocate to Paris. It was during the post-World War II era that he truly made a name for himself, captivating the fashion world with his innovative and architectural designs. Balenciaga played a significant role in popularizing styles such as the tunic dress, chemise dress, and empire waistlines, both in dresses and coats. Ultimately, Balenciaga retired and closed his haute couture houses in 1968, and he passed away in Spain in 1972. Today, the legacy of the Balenciaga name lives on as part of the Gucci group, under the creative direction of Nicholas Ghesquiere. The first fragrance released under the Balenciaga label was Le Dix, in 1947, aptly named after the address of Balenciaga’s boutique in Paris. Currently, Balenciaga collaborates with Coty to offer a range of fragrances. The house of Balenciaga has an impressive collection of 30 perfumes, with the first edition dating back to 1947 and the most recent launch in 2016. Throughout the years, Balenciaga fragrances have been masterfully crafted in collaboration with esteemed perfumers such as Gerard Anthony, Jacques Jantzen, Germaine Cellier, Francis Fabron, Francoise Caron, Ron Winnegrad, Jean-Claude Ellena, Domitille Michalon Bertier, Olivier Polge, Olivier Gillotin, Christophe Raynaud, Jean-Christophe Hérault, Raymond Chaillan, Elie Roger, and Dominique Preyssas.
