Avon Products Inc. has a long and notable history in the beauty industry. The company began in 1886 under the name The California Perfume Company, originally focused on publishing. However, a shift in the business’s direction led to the creation of perfumes and cosmetics. Mrs. P.F.E. Albee played a pivotal role in establishing the direct sales model that Avon still uses today, becoming the California Perfume Company’s earliest representative.
By 1896, the company published its first sales brochure, and by 1902, it had an impressive roster of 10,000 sales representatives. At a time when women’s opportunities for employment were limited to clerical and domestic work, Avon paved the way for female empowerment in the workplace.
