Avon Products Inc. has a long and notable history in the beauty industry. The company began in 1886 under the name The California Perfume Company, originally focused on publishing. However, a shift in the business’s direction led to the creation of perfumes and cosmetics. Mrs. P.F.E. Albee played a pivotal role in establishing the direct sales model that Avon still uses today, becoming the California Perfume Company’s earliest representative.
By 1896, the company published its first sales brochure, and by 1902, it had an impressive roster of 10,000 sales representatives. At a time when women’s opportunities for employment were limited to clerical and domestic work, Avon paved the way for female empowerment in the workplace.
In 1928, Avon launched its first products bearing the iconic Avon brand name. The following year, the company filed for its first “Avon” trademark on a beauty product, laying the foundation for the transformation into the Avon we know today. In 1939, the company officially changed its name to Avon.
Avon became a publicly-traded stock company in 1946, marking a significant milestone in its growth. Over the second half of the 20th century, Avon expanded its business globally, establishing a strong presence in numerous countries. This expansion positioned Avon as a leader in the beauty industry.
Remaining a relevant force in the market, Avon embraces technology for both product development and marketing strategies. The company has effectively reached new generations of customers by enlisting the support of influential celebrities such as Reese Witherspoon, Courtney Cox, and Patrick Dempsey as spokesmodels.
Recognizing the importance of catering to diverse audiences, Avon introduced a new brand, mark, in 2003, which specifically targeted the youth market. Throughout its rich history, Avon has made perfumes a staple in its product line. Equipped with an extensive fragrance base, Avon boasts 1,249 perfumes.
