Antonio Puig

In 1914, Antonio Puig founded a family-owned company in Spain that focused on the production of beauty and perfumery products. Over the years, the company expanded its international presence while maintaining its 100% family ownership. An important milestone for the company came in 1940 with the launch of the fragrance Agua Lavanda Puig, marking a turning point in its history. The company’s headquarters was relocated to Barcelona and has remained there ever since.

Antonio Puig’s four sons gradually inherited the business and each focused on different aspects of the company. Two sons concentrated on perfumery, one on diversification, and another on institutional relations. In the 1960s, the company began working towards its future expansion by assembling a team of talented individuals who recognized the value of a family-owned company. They improved the quality of products by establishing perfumery and cosmetics laboratories, collaborating with other research facilities, and applying industrial design principles to their products.

Puig embarked on internationalization efforts and established its first overseas division in the USA in 1959. They collaborated with renowned designer Paco Rabanne and founded a perfume factory in Chartres, France. A pivotal moment for the company came in the 1980s when they signed a contract with Carolina Herrera to create and market her fragrances. This success led Puig to venture into the fashion industry and begin producing Herrera’s fashion lines.

In the late 1990s, Puig expanded its portfolio by acquiring brands such as Nina Ricci and formed a holding company called Puig Beauty & Fashion in 1999. The third generation of family members took over the management of the company, with input from non-family members in decision-making processes. Puig continued to grow by partnering with popular Spanish brands and securing a distribution and creation agreement with Comme de Garcons. They also developed cosmetics and perfumes for Prada.

In 2008, Puig began a successful collaboration with renowned artist Shakira, developing a line of signature products inspired by and created for the singer. The company underwent a name change in 2009 and became simply known as Puig. They also signed a license agreement with Valentino to launch a new fragrance and acquired a majority stake in the Jean Gaultier fashion house.

Puig has established itself as a brand builder that specializes in translating fashion brand images into the world of perfume. Designer Antonio Puig has created a total of 45 perfumes, with the earliest edition dating back to 1940 and the most recent to 2017. These fragrances were crafted in collaboration with esteemed perfumers such as Marcel Carles, Jacques Polge, Alberto Morillas, and Pierre Bourdon.
