Acqua di Parma originated as a modest factory in Parma, where it crafted its first fragrance, Colonia, in 1916. Initially, this exquisite scent was primarily used to perfume gentlemen’s handkerchiefs. However, Colonia swiftly became an emblem of Italian elegance adored by American and European celebrities in the pre-war (1930s) and post-war (1950s) eras. Esteemed figures such as Cary Grant, David Niven, Ava Gardner, Eva Turner, and later Audrey Hepburn, adorned themselves with Colonia, professing their ardent admiration for it.
Over time, Acqua di Parma grew from its humble beginnings into a prominent brand with widespread distribution. Unfortunately, the fickleness of the fashion industry and the capricious nature of fortune eventually turned their backs on this esteemed Italian house. After the years of immense popularity, Acqua di Parma found itself in a struggle for survival, determined to defy oblivion.
In the early 1990s, three influential Italians—Diego Della Valle (Tod’s s.p.a), Luca Cordero Di Montezemolo (Ferrari), and Paolo Borgomanero (La Perla)—joined forces in a patriotic endeavor to preserve Italian classics. Their mission led to the restoration of Acqua di Parma, with the reproduction of its old fragrances and the launch of new projects, including the innovative aromatherapy line Blu Mediterraneo, exquisite fragrances for interiors, and the sophisticated leather accessories collection known as the Travel Collection. Seeking strategic investments and global recognition, these three gentlemen sealed a collaboration with the luxury goods powerhouse LVMH. In 2003, LVMH acquired Acqua di Parma in its entirety, protecting this splendid exemplar of Italian style and ensuring its ongoing success.
Once again, Hollywood has turned its gaze towards the small, yet proud, Acqua di Parma. The adoration of its illustrious predecessors has been passed down to modern icons such as Kevin Costner, Woody Allen, and Sharon Stone. Currently, the designer fragrance house boasts an impressive portfolio of 85 perfumes in our fragrance base. With a long and esteemed history, Acqua di Parma is one of the oldest perfume houses in existence, having produced its earliest edition in 1916 and its most recent in 2023. Throughout the years, Acqua di Parma has collaborated with renowned perfumers, including Bertrand Duchaufour, Jean-Claude Ellena, Francois Demachy, Michel Almairac, Francoise Caron, Francis Kurkdjian, Antoine Maisondieu, Alberto Morillas, Mélanie Carestia, and Nicolas Bonneville, to create their exquisite fragrances.
