Acqua di Biella

Acqua di Biella is a distinguished Italian niche brand that was established in 1871 in the town of Biella. The story of the Acqua di Biella brand begins with Luigi Cantono, who, after studying chemistry in Germany in 1865, acquired the knowledge of producing Eau de Cologne. Inspired by this, Cantono returned to Biella and decided to transform his factories into perfume and body-care product producers.

In 1871, production commenced in the historic building on XX Settembre street in Biella, where Cantono created a fragrant cologne named Acqua di Biella. Cantono’s company inventory from January 1st, 1872, listed various products such as colognes, bear fat, castor oil, “flowers of Italy,” violet ointments, analgesic paste, toothpaste, brilliantines, soaps, rose juice lip creams, face powders, scented candles, and more.

In 1878, the Reale Manifattura Luigi Cantono was honored as the official supplier of the Savoia Royal Household, receiving the Savoia coat of arms. Acqua di Biella gained widespread recognition and appreciation by 1880, winning several prizes and medals, including a first-class gold medal at the international perfumery exhibition in Melbourne, Australia in 1880.

Over the years, Acqua di Biella expanded its manufacturing activities and maintained its commitment to craftsmanship, employing top-quality raw materials, meticulous processing, and highly selective distribution. In 1965, Luigi Cantono’s wife, Paola Corradi Cervi, introduced new French-inspired fragrances and refreshed the brand’s image with elegance and refinement.

In 1980, Consuelo Cantono, the “nose” of Acqua di Biella, recognized the importance of preserving the brand’s heritage and introduced new fragrances based on the old recipes of the Reale Manifattura. Continuing the family tradition, Chiara Cantono joined the company in 1996, utilizing her professional experience in architecture and product planning to revitalize and further enhance the legend of Acqua di Biella.

In 1999, Acqua di Biella underwent a reorganization, focusing on the quality, selectivity, and internationalization of the brand. The brand’s production centered on alcoholic perfumes, carefully selecting reliable suppliers and the finest raw materials. Skilled craftsmen within the Piedmont territory ensured compliance with the brand’s high standards of quality.

Acqua di Biella’s fragrance line embodies the pursuit of quality, excellence, and the rich history and traditions of Piedmont. The packaging pays tribute to the crystal-clear and dynamic rivers of the Biella area, exuding both freshness and a refined elegance. The square bottle design and black urea resin cap bear the Acqua di Biella seal and reflect the original packaging’s precision and simplicity.

Since 2003, Acqua di Biella has been reintroduced in Italy and abroad through a meticulously selected network of specialized shops, showcasing the art of Italian perfumery. The brand has developed eight fragrances, all crafted by the acclaimed perfumer Maurizio Cerizza.
