Abercrombie & Fitch is a well-established American lifestyle brand that has been in existence since 1892. Initially founded by David Abercrombie and Ezra Fitch, the first store operated out of Manhattan, NY, offering premium sporting and travel gear. Although the company ceased operations in 1976, it was later revived in 1978 by Texas retailer Oshman’s Sporting Goods. Oshman’s acquired the Abercrombie & Fitch name and focused on mail order business while establishing boutiques in prominent locations like Beverly Hills, CA, Dallas, TX, and New York, NY. In 1988, the company was purchased by American clothing company The Limited, which strategically repositioned Abercrombie & Fitch as a leading high-end casual luxury clothing brand targeting the youth market. Today, Abercrombie & Fitch is based in Ohio and operates over 300 stores throughout the United States, including flagship stores in Canada, Puerto Rico, Europe, and Asia.
Known for its superior quality and modern “preppy” style, Abercrombie & Fitch offers clothing that caters to the higher end of the youth retail market. Additionally, the company owns subsidiary brands such as abercrombie (specializing in children’s clothing), Hollister Co. (offering more affordable clothing targeted at teenagers), and Gilly Hicks (the Australian women’s sector promoting lingerie and women’s lounge wear). In its physical stores, Abercrombie & Fitch employs sales associates referred to as “models,” who play a crucial role in marketing the brand’s clothing. These associates are also featured prominently in the company’s advertising campaigns and catalogs, which have garnered attention due to their provocative and controversial nature. Often photographed in black and white, the models are frequently portrayed shirtless or semi-nude.
